Questions to Ask Your OB or Midwife

Prenatal visits can feel like a blur of "any questions?" and then you're in the car remembering everything you meant to ask. We've got you. Here's a friendly checklist so you can make the most of your time with your OB or midwife.

Start with the big picture: What's their approach to labor? How do they feel about induction, going past your due date, or cesarean? Who catches the baby if they're not on call? Do they support birth preferences like movement, minimal intervention, or doulas? You're building a relationship, so get the vibe early.

Testing and screening can be a maze. Ask what's routine, what's optional, and what you'd do with the results. No wrong answers-just information so you can decide what feels right for you.

Prenatal visit
Your visits are the perfect time to get on the same page with your provider.

Hospital or birth center policies matter more than you might think. Ask about visitors, doula access, eating and drinking in labor, freedom to move, and monitoring. Some places are more flexible than others; it helps to know before you're in the thick of it.

Write your questions down between visits (phone notes, sticky notes, whatever works). Otherwise you'll blank the second they say "anything else?" It happens to everyone.

Your doula can help you brainstorm what to ask and even role-play the conversation if you're nervous. They're used to this stuff and want you to feel informed and heard.

Don't be shy about asking the same thing twice or asking for clarification. This is your pregnancy and your birth. A good provider will take the time to explain.

Support and questions
Coming prepared helps you and your provider work as a team.

Topics that often get forgotten: postpartum care (who checks on you after?), breastfeeding support, and what happens if you need a referral to a specialist. Tuck those in your list too.

You've got this. Asking questions isn't being difficult-it's being engaged. Your provider is there to support you, and a little prep goes a long way toward a positive experience.

Here's to a great partnership with your care team.
